This Week In Chic - January 23, 2016

So I'm trying something new in 2016. Combining my love for all things fashion, and the one thing we all have in common, can't escape, and should be all be paying constant attention to in these... interesting... times: The News.

Snobbies,  I present to you:

This Week in Chic
Click on the BLUE links for further reading

Lets start with your girl Stacey Dash... You may remember her from the 90s Teen Essential Movie Clueless. You may also be currently familiar with her role as pundit for Fox News.  This week, she made some not-so-chic comments in response to some of Black Hollywood's decision to boycott the Academy Awards next month:

“We have to make up our minds, either we want to have segregation
or integration,” Dash said. “If we don’t want segregation then we need
to get rid of channels like BET and the BET Awards and the [NAACP] Image
Awards, where you are only awarded if you are black. If it were the other
way around, we would be up in arms, it’s a double standard.”

Does she not remember that Awards shows like the ones she mentioned were created because of the lack of diversity in mainstream award shows? Accredited and relevant Black actress (ahem, Stacey) and 2015 Emmy Award winner Viola Davis definitely said it better when she she raised the thought provoking question: " You can change the academy, but if there are no black films being produced, what is there to vote for?”  Maybe the  B(lack)Party -- Jada, Spike, and Will -- should base their movement off those types of questions.  How many Oscar worthy movies were actually created this year that starred minorities?  Is the Academy really  the root of  Hollywood's lack of diversity? Is Jada a supportive wife AND sore loser?  Will did seem a bit reluctant in joining the boycott up until a few days ago... #IJS

And now for the FASHION of it all...

What to wear to your Bestie's Oscar party when you had every intention of boycotting, but the red carpet, Pinterested appetizers you've been dying to try, and Martian-tinis are calling your name:

This audacious ensemble by way of Versace's Spring/Summer 2016 collection boasts red, black, green, and gold which are the colors of Mother Africa's soul, according the Black Enrichment summer camp I attended back in 5th grade.  Give that Oscar party a Concussion with your look inspired by the Mother Land while simultaneously showing love to all of your homies that couldn't (or wouldn't) attend the night's festivities.  Throw a little shade at the Oscars by wearing these Blacked-out power sunglasses from Zazzle., $93

Next we talk Flint.  Michigan that is... And how it relates to Pantone's standout color of Spring 2016, Fiesta.

In efforts to save money in the finacially strapped town of Flint, Michigan, city officials decided to run water to its residents from the Flint River -- known for its polluted, bacteria infested waters -- while it waited for a new pipeline system from the cleaner waters of Lake Huron to be constructed.  Since this change, residents in this poverty stricken area have been forced to drink, cook, and bathe with water containing high amounts of lead and endangering the physical and mental health of thousands of children who are more susceptible to lead poisoning

This would definitely be the opposite of a fiesta.

After more than a year of poisoned residents, neglected complaints, bottled water drives that helped little to no one, and the discovery of a simple $100 per day fix that could have diverted this whole crises went totally ignored, Governor Rick Snyder FINALLY declared a state of emergency for Flint, allowing the National Guard to provide aid and clean water to the city's residents.  This also brought national attention from concerned Americans, activists, and celebs like Cher, rapper Big Sean, Magic Johnson, and comedian Sandra Bernhard, who grew up in Flint.

Rock your Fifty Shades of Flint (Water) in these StellaSport by Stella McCartney for Adidas athletic pieces.  Whether you're dashing your Deer Park to the nearest donation facility, writing a check, or donating online, StellaSport has something chic for you to wear while you're feeling charitable.  Check out her latest collection here.  It's super dope, featuring pieces almost too cute to wear to your hot yoga and black light spin classes... ALMOST!  And best of all, most of the pieces are on sale NOW!!!

If donating in person, I encourage you to emulate this model's parkour-esque stance on your way to the nearest facility.  Our fellow Americans need YOUR help!

That's all from me for now.  See you next time for

Pay Your Dues to Rouge

A Haiku to Ruby Woo

Pulse Paused. Heart Stopping.
Breath stolen, eyes are watching.
Wink. Smile. Lips poppin'.
*Snaps Fingers*

An ode to lipstick?  Why not?! Lipstick is literally my favorite part of being a woman, and my even favorite-er cosmetic!  Mascara runs, lip glosses leave permanent clothing stains, and don't get me started on how the foundation smudges on my Android leave people thinking that the brown residue is some type of secretion from my dirty pores.

So on this day,

we pay our dues to rouge, highlighting the hottest hues of Fall/Winter 2015!
(Can you believe September issues will be on shelves in just a month?)

Send Me Some Nudes

When you want your eyes to do the talking and your lips be but a whisper, go nude.  Keep in mind that nude shades vary depending on your skin tone, so your bronzy BFF from Brazil might not be able to loan you lipstick if you're fresh off the lodka from Moscow. The trick to pulling off a nude lip is by lining the lips with a pencil two shades darker than your skin, then filling it in with a lipstick that's one shade lighter. Complete the look with a beige-ish lip gloss to keep you from looking severely dehydrated.  And you said you didn't look good naked...smh

"Think of nude lipstick the same way you'd think about your foundation. To get the right color, consider your skin color, hair color, even eye color. For someone with a fairer complexion, a nude that's too beige-y will appear yellow; instead, pick a nude that's in the pale pink family like this YSL shade. For medium tones, I would use a deeper beige to rose nude. If you want the truest shade of the lipstick to shine through, neutralize your own lip color first by applying a tinted moisturizer or foundation." — Jeanine Lobell
Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté lipstick in Nude Beige, $34,
For fair skin, try Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte in Nude Beige.  $34
"This is a great neutral brown with a natural, smooth matte finish. The color is just right—not too pale, and good for day or night, especially those times when you're rocking a dramatic eye. Your lips won't steal the show, but they definitely won't be overlooked." — Jeannia Robinette
Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Canotier, $32.50,
For Medim skin tones, try Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in Conother.

"This shade has the perfect amount and tone of beige for a nude lip that won't wash you out. I like to apply the color with a brush then tap with my index finger to blend into the skin so that it doesn't have a heavy 'lipstick' quality." — Stevie Huynh
Tom Ford Lip Color in Sable Smoke, $48,
For Darker skin, try Tom Ford Lip Color in Sable Smoke.
Girl, you just got RED

It's alluring, its the color of love, and it's timeless! Your mama's mama's mama's mama wore it when she met your great-great grandfather, and BAM! You're here reading this blog! You litterally owe your life to rouge!  The best way to rock red is by first applying the lipstick without lip liner.  Blot your lips on a tissue, then line your lips using a nude lip pencil.  The nude liner keeps the red lipstick from bleeding into the skin around your lips, which is common with red lipstick.  Finally, apply one last layer, and you're ready to join the ranks with your great-grands and pro-create a new generation! To spare you the break down of skin tones, I'm only recommending one lipstick: Ruby Woo.  I've never seen this shade look bad on anyone. EVER.
(Scroll up to re-read my def poetry jam haiku homage, then click here for my blog breakdown on red lipstick).

For a Sexy You, try Ruby Woo!

The Black Bug Bled Black Blood

Imagine how sexy and demure your lips would look mouthing that line again and again in a dark shade of lipstick.  Notice I said dark, not black.  Shadowy hues of deep burgundy, purple, and blackberry are back again this fall to cast an air of mystery on your already chic style.  You want to apply dark shades with a lip brush for precision, starting from the outer corner of the mouth to the center of your upper and lower lips.  As with red, line last.  I like a dark matte lip, but I've been known to dab a little Bobbi Brown Crystal lip gloss on the center of my bottom lip, then smudge for shine perfection.

For Fair skin, try Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in Rouge Feu.
For Medium skin, try Model Co. Party Proof Lipstick - Matte in Purple Sangria.
For Dark skin, try Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Va Va Violet.

Now that I've given you Lipstick Life, go out and kiss someone!!! Until next time, stay Snobby!

Willy Nilly for Lilly!

Did the pews at your church look a little empty this morning? That's because every Real Housewife of every town in America was at Target  trying to get their oven mitts on a piece of the Lilly Pulitzer pie!

If you don't know who Lilly Pulitzer is, she is a whimsical designer popular amongst genteel ladies across the globe, with an extreme following on the East Coast of the US; especially in the South where I live. Who better to team up with LP than TargĂ©t, the haven for people too good to shop at Walmart, but too financially conscious (or can't afford) to shop the stores of Target's regularly priced guest labels (i.e ME!).  Like most of their featured designer lines, this collaboration has been an obvious success. Brightly colored pieces with invigorating prints flew off the shelves faster than a one legged cat in a sandbox! Sorry, I partook in the Lilly Pulitzer mayhem in Atlanta, GA so I'm allowed to talk like that since the experience officiated me as an official southerner :) The racks of the store I shopped were TOTALLY EMPTY in under 3 minutes!

Check out this  video I shot of an elderly woman getting a top snatched right out of her hands by another shopper!

Happy shoppers were able to walk away with pieces from the lifestyle collection that included dresses, shoes, scarves, hats, pieces for lil Lillys, indoor and outdoor decor, and let's not forget Lilly Pulitzer nail polish colors by Essie. Each piece is fun, full of personality, and makes you want to have a cool glass of [vodka spiked] lemonade by the pool on a hot summer day.  I was pleased with the functionality, style, and cut of most of the pieces, but am a little worried about the ladies who are going to show up at summer BBQs looking like cookie cutter Stepford Wives because of the repetition of colors and prints used throughout the entire line.  Let's have a look at some of my favorite things from the collection:

Shift dress - $38
I love how their shift dresses had a nipped waist, creating a flattering figure for those who may not have one!

Challis Romper $34

Gold Sandals $30

Shift dress - $38
This print will go great with just about any color solid!

Raffia Tote $30

Girls Eyelet Tank $14
Girls Pom Pom Shorts $12

Jumper $44
Everything comes in Plus Sizes, too! EVERYTHING!!!

Charm Bracelet $20

Gold Plated Giraffe Flask with Funnel $15

Nosie Posie Hammock $150
This is literally the ONLY thing I want to kick back in this summer!

There's a whole lot more to choose from... at least there was before 8:30 this morning... But like I said, these are my picks from the collection.  There ewere a few other things I would like to have shown, but some of the pictures available on Target's website didn't do the merch any justice.  Not to mention, if you know what one piece looks like you can pretty much guess how every thing else looks since  the color, prints, and fabrics are pretty much redundant. If your Target is lucky enough to still have some leftovers, keep this in mind: Everything is pink, green, blue, and white... Eyelet, pom pom, cotton, or polyester... And if they made it for mom, you best be believin' they made it for girl, baby, lawn and dinner table!

While I think the collection is just adorable, I was unable to score a piece for myself.  If I could have, I probably would have only nabbed a pair of shorts and a headband.  I was, however, able to get a top and  a pair of pom pom shorts for a special lil tot, and I can't wait to see her looking precious in Lilly for Target!

Until the next craze, TrendSnobs!!!!
