Frugal Fashionista: Thrifting, Consigning, & Swapping

Can't afford to Rip the Runway?  Instead praying you will look Hip Someday?

Lusting after Gucci, Fendi and Prada? But opening your closet and seeing Zip, Zilch, and Nada?

Is the closest you ever came to owning a pair of red bottoms that day you stepped in a puddle of hobo fight blood in the MARTA station bathroom???

Chile, Boo!
You don't need all that stuff to look like a million bucks!

This blog entry is to help take you from a Wishing Window Shopper to a Frugal Fashionista...

Without playing yourself for a baller!
(snap!)

Don't get me wrong, I love my boutiques and online stores where I buy oh-so-cute outfits that you could never find at your local mall; but thrift and consignment stores are shopping's best kept secret, and a Frugal Fashionishta Fav! Keep in mind that being frugal is an art form, so you have to be current on your trends so that you don't look as if you just escaped some twisted time warp.  You also need to know how and where to shop.  The most frugalest (I know that's not a word. Don't start) places to shop are at thrift stores, consignment shops, and at clothing swaps.  In order to make these shopping experiences work for you, you must first know what each of these are:

Thrifiting

Thrifting:  Shopping at a thrift store.  Doing this gets you great vintage/ boho chic clothes at rock bottom prices.  The picture on the top right resembles an outfit that could be found at just about any thrift store, but is actually a look from one of designer  Kenzo's recent collections.  The picture on the bottom shows what can happen when combining pieces from a thrift store with newer pieces, or pieces already in your closet!  Buyer Beware: There is a lot of digging involved in thrifting, but if you love the thrill of the chase, go for it!

Consignment Shops

Consignment shops: Places that give you money or a store credit in exchange for your gently used clothes!  Your inner Frugal Fashionista should have just shrieked!  These places are easier to shop than thrift stores because they usually only purchase clothes that are trendy and up to date, offering you the latest styles at great prices!  There is a lot less digging involved here than at thrift stores; hence the slight price hike. If you can't get down with being seen in a thrift store, you'll enjoy consignment shopping because they typically have a boutique feel.  I love to shop at consignment stores in upscale areas because you have ladies dropping off great garments from last season that are still relevent in current fashion.

Clothing Swaps

Clothing swaps have recently crept onto the scene, and are taking Frugal Fashionistas to the next level!  A clothing swap could be an event, or a party you have with your girlfriends.  Here's how it works:  Each person is required to bring a minimum number of items... say, at least three wearable garments, a piece of jewelry, and a handbag.  Consider those items as your cover charge. Once you're in, you meet up with people who also brought clothes to swap, and the two of you make a deal!  The key to swapping is to bring trendy pieces that you still like to wear, but could bear to part with for something else... you know, to keep your style interesting.  I've been able to find clothing swaps by googling "clothing swap" for my local area.  If you can't find one, organize one with your friends! Make a night of it!

This was the first installment of many ways to be a Frugal Fashionista, so stay tuned!  And don't forget to comment on this or any other of my blogs!(Gmail account required) I'd love to hear from you!  Shout out to my readers in the UK, Russia, Germany, and Nepal!  I see you!

You Too Can Do Rouge

If I had a cocktail for every time a lady told me that red lipstick did not look good on her, I would be able to face splash every reality "housewife" 10 times over.

Red lipstick is a timeless beauty staple that dates back over thousands of years.  It's sexy, sensual, alluring, and a great confidence booster!  Studies show that the first facial feature a man is attracted to are the lips... So since he can't see those baby blues from across the club amidst the bright lights and fog machines, your next best bet is luring him over with a rouged pout.

Red lipstick through the years

The key to pulling off red lipstick is knowing which colors in the stick match your skin tone.

Fair Skin

Reds with a shot of coral look best on you.  The coral makes your pout pop without overpowering you.

Medium Skin

You can do anything from a pink-cranberry to a true red to bring out your skin's golden undertones.

Dark Skin

Rich colors like burgundy or warm brick look great on dark skin, even if your skin is darker than Chanel's skin below.

If you're dark and daring, go to your nearest make-up counter and play around with colors like my beautiful BFF, Krystal!  Check her out in a red and pink lip!

Lipstick Tricks

Wearing red lipstick isn't like other colors where you line your lips, then fill them in with a similar lip color. The best way to rock rouge is by first applying the lipstick without lip liner. Blot your lips on a tissue, then line your lips using a nude lip pencil.  (Nude meaning YOUR skin color, not nude like those pink pumps you're trying to pull off with your carmel skin...But that's a whole 'nother blog for a whole 'nother time!)  The nude liner keeps the red lipstick from from bleeding into the skin around your lips, which is common with red lipstick.  Finally, apply one last layer of rouge, and you're ready for the day or night! (Note: Sheer red for day, deep red for night)

In this picture, skin tone neutral concealer is used instead of a nude lip pencil.
Another common rouge mishap is the occurrence of lipstick on your front teeth. That look is never haute, so to prevent this from happening, stick your CLEAN index finger in your mouth like you would a lollipop. Wrap your lips around your finger, and pull it out.  Now all the lipstick that would be on your teeth is on your finger, and you don't have to worry about that guy you just lured over thinking you have a horrible case of GINGIVITIS!
Eeek!!!
Please note that the lip colors mentioned above are only suggestions, and I realize that there are many skin tones beyond and in between the ones I have shown.  To make this work for you, categorize yourself as either fair, medium, or dark, use my color recommendations, then head to your nearest make-up counter to find out exactly which shade is right for you.  Don't go to just one specific brand, TRY THEM ALL to find the RIGHT ROUGE!!!

The Snobbies - MTV Movie Award 2012 Edition

Its that time again for another edition of the Snobbies -- This time for the MTV Movie Awards!!!

I must say, that I was deeply disappointed in the night's display of drab duds...  This is the MTV Movie Awards, people!  Show some EXCITEMENT!  Give me some AVANT GARDE!  Dish out the DRAMA!

I hold a special place in my heart for any MTV award show, because this is the place where the hottest young stars come together on the red carpet to celebrate their talents, and express their true selves through fashion.  Evening gowns are frowned upon, tuxedos are worn in an irreverent manner, and just about anything goes... I don't know what looks the stars were going for this year; but as they say in show business...

THE SHOW MUST GO ON!!!!

The "Wanna Be Bey" Award goes to...

Ciara

Ciara appears to be rocking a dress from the Rave Collection... Yes, Rave. You know, your high school hot spot for all things cheap, tight, and stretchy?  She's definitely channeling her inner Bey ca. last month at the Met ball by wearing a dress that almost reveals her reproductive organs.  At first glance, I actually almost thought this was Beyonce, but quickly realized it was just Ciara trying reclaim her "Goodies" status.

The Douchebag Swag award goes to...

LMFAO

I actually don't hate their outfits, only because they took fashion risks that I usually associate with the MTV red carpet.  I'm loving the Americana-Biker chic ensemble of Goonrock, as well as the aforementioned irreverent tuxedo jacket in leopard print worn by Red Foo (who I heard was Barry Gordy of Mowtown's son); but they all get the Douchebag Swag Award because of Sky Blu in the middle, who looks like a modern day version of Al B. Sure if he were ever to be featured on an episode of To Catch A Predator.  With the exception of Sky Blue, the individual members of LMFAO look MTV Phresh, but collectively, they look like a gang of douchers.

The Chic Peek Award Goes to...
Elizabeth Banks

I'm loving Elizabeth Banks in this Elie Saab jumpsuit.  I love that this outfit is subtly sexy, shows off her figure, and is oh-so-appropriate for this occasion.  She kept it simple with messy bun, natural make up, and dark eyeliner.  Great work!

The Odd Couple Award goes to...

Wiz Khalifah and Amber Rose

I mean... I'm not saying be lame and dress alike, but could you at least look like you're going to the same place?  I feel like Wiz's outfit lacks direction.  I mean... he looks like an out of work short order cook.  I am, however, loving Amber's look.  She's wearing green... a symbolic color that seems to be the glue of their relationship -- money and weed.  Amber might want to push back from the table a lil bit, too.  Cellulite is NEVER chic.

The Close, But No Cigar Award goes to...

Emma Watson

Eh.  I don't know why, but I'm just not feeling this dress from the Brood Fall 2012 collection.  Fashion critics loved this look, but I don't.  I'm all for the mixing of prints, but I don't like the cut, I don't like those pocket thingies on the front of the dress, and her shoes could have been edgier.  All of that aside, her look is MTV red carpet approved because its fun and different.

The Klo$ely Ke$a Award goes to...

Kristin Stewart

This dress was another disappointment.  It didn't fit right, and the front isn't cute.  The colors are on trend for Fall/Winter 2012, so I guess that's a plus; and the back isn't so bad.  Overall, however, this dress is a train wreck... and that's why I give it the Klo$ely Ke$ha award, because Ke$ha should have been the one wearing it.  It might have actually looked good on her.  Crazy hair, a lightning bolt over the eye... Yeah.  I could see that.

The Oh, You're Still Alive Award goes to...

Paris Hilton

Seriously.  Why was she even there?  Cute dress, average shoes, hot clutch... But go home

The Gold Medal Award goes to...

Brooke Hogan

"TrendSnob, why the Gold Medal Award?", you may ask.  Cuz this chick looks like she is competing in the Winter Olympics for ice dancing, THAT'S WHY!!! I've got the perfect shoes for this outfit by D Squared.  Check 'em out:

Now that's an outfit!

The Honorable Mention Award goes to...

Jessica Biel

You can never go wrong in Chanel.  I'm loving the textured knit of this dress, along with the cocoon silhouette she's serving -- tres chic for Fall/Winter 2012.  I could think of a million other shoes to wear with this dress, but these Barbara Bui ankle strap heels are definitely a force to be reckoned with.  She pops on the red carpet, which I love.  Totally digging the hair, simple accessories, mod cat eye, and barely there make up.  Good work, Jess! (We tight like that!)

And the SNOBBIE goes to....

Emma Stone!!!

Is she over dressed for an MTV red carpet?  Maybe a little.  But is she shitting on all you hoes?  Yeah, definitely a lot! I love that she changed the game by switching up her usually rouge locks to bombshell blonde for the occasion.  The structured peplum bustier by Parisian designer Martin Grant is giving me all the life I need, and is a direct contrast to her soft, slightly bubbled hem.  Don't get me started on the skin tone perfect, ankle strap heels with whatever the heck that fluffy stuff is going down the back of those shoes, courtesy of shoe designer Brian Atwood.  And last but not least, the color blocked patent leather Fendi clutch. Tres Magnifique!  Emma never seems to disappoint!

So that's my sad, sad synopsis on the  fashion at the 2012 MTV movie awards.  This is the TrendSnob signing out saying to all young celebrities:

DO BETTER NEXT TIME!!!!
