First Lady of Style

Republican, Democrat, Independent, Conservative, Liberal, Capitalist or Socialist... No matter what your views are on policy or the current affairs of state, there are only 2 things to remember on Tuesday, November 4th:

1)  VOTE
&
2)  Be PC
(Politically Chic)

Scoff if you will, feminists, but the suffragettes didn't... err...suffrage... for us not to step out in style on election day!  So FASHIONISTAS UNITE!  Its time to throw your hat in to the ring and VOW to WOW! Bring some VOGUE to the voting booth...  Put the ELLE in the election process... embed some BAZAAR into those ballots!

And now for our first look:

The NEW Red White and Blue
All my women who independent! (throw your hands up at me) Not a Republican or a Dem?  Show off your red, white, and blue with a wayward edge in this oh-so-warm long line cardigan, asymmetrical tee, and comfy boyfriend jeans.  The bootie, stud trimmed hat, and military-inspired dog tags let everyone know that you're a rebel with a cause.

Road to the White House

Who says you can't show up to the polls looking like a scandal waiting to happen?  Two things about my girl Olivia Pope: 1) She always looks GREAT, and 2) She always gets what she wants.  Take that attitude to the voting booth, and your candidate just might win!  And don't get it twisted, new fashion laws allow white after labor day! Tastefully, of course, but it is allowed.  If your mother's fashion advice from many moons ago is still ringing in your head, try a winter white, which has a little cream in the mix and doesn't appear so bright amid the rich colors of fall.

Wall Street Chic

Occupy the essence of Wall Street in these window pane trousers that resemble those crazy charts that indicate the rise and fall of our eminent doom, paired with a vibrant straight fit top-- a must have for this season, and a smart pair of derbies (the shoes).  The geek glasses, statement necklace, and leather tote bring added notes of excitement to a place that can be... well... A great depression.

Woman of Honor

Why not dress up the dark side of our country's victorious past with a soldierly spin on Military fashion.  Double-breasted blazers are a big hit for both men and women this fall, and these satin olive pants are to die for! ... Honorably, of course.  Add feminine flair with the perfect navy pumpcamouflaged timepiece, and a rouged lip.

Judge Cutie

Justice is the new black in this stylish ensemble that pays homage to one of the most important branches of our government.  Persecute those fashion felons in this amazing sweater that features a detachable collar, a modern swing
skirt -- another key item for your closet this season, and leather and suede gavel banging booties!  Justice is blind in these D&G hater blockers, and  black opaque tights are always within the legal limits of Fall Fashion Law (yes, that is a thing).

Beach Body Beautiful

And we made it to summer!  Did you drop that winter weight yet?  I sure hope so, because I'm ready to talk about beach bodies!

Swim cover ups are summer's hottest must-have, but what's under that frock when it's time to uncover?  Your body, of course!  The key to looking BEACH BODY BEAUTIFUL is knowing your body type.  No need to hide!  Let this post be your guide  to pairing your physique with the perfect  swimsuit.

Your body type is an Inverted Triangle (Athletic) if you have:
Swim Solutions:
  • V-neck halter tops and racer back bathing suits are your friend.  They provide support at the bust, while deep V necks provide sex appeal.  Under wires also provide additional support for my busty ladies.
  • Give the appearance of a more defined waistline with ruching at the waist.  This will take the focus off your broad shoulders and narrow hips.
  • Play with patterns to keep the eyes from focusing on any one part of your body.  A cute pattern will make your bust and shoulders appear less noticeable.
Avoid:
  • Triangle bikini tops
  • Solid color one-pieces with no detail
  • Swimsuits with high necklines

You are considered to be a Pear shape if you:

Swim Solutions:
  • Pick a swimsuit with prints and details at the top to make your bust proportionate to the lower half of your body.
  • Choose a top with a deep V or scalloped neckline.  Heavy padding is a also a bust plus.
  • Choose a bottom with a high cut brief to make the legs appear longer.
  • Lengthen your torso with a tankini
Avoid:
  • Boy shorts
  • Skimpy or triangle bikini tops

Your body type is Oval if you:

Swim Solutions:
  • Select fabrics that are designed to suck, tuck, and cinch.  These types of textiles are usually thick and full of lycra or spandex.  Check the tags, ladies!
  • Colorful or printed bands are a clever way to hide the tummy and accentuate the waist.
  •  Horizontal side panels are also a way to allude to a slimmer mid-section.
  • If you're rocking a bikini, opt for a banded or high waist bottom that covers the navel.
  • Stylish cover-ups
Avoid:
  • Billowy or trapeze tops
  •  Quirky skirts that make you look silly.  Embrace those curves, girl!
  • Stringy or strappy bathing suits

You have an Hourglass figure if you:

Swim Solutions:
  • Try a solid one-piece swimsuit.  Your body, of which I am oh-so-jealous, doesn't need much accentuation, so why not just make your physique be the focal point?
  • Deep V and plunging neck lines will compliment your horizontal symmetry.
  • If you're going to do a bikini, look for ones with details at the bust, waist, and / or hips.  If they're gonna look, guide their eyes to all the right places! wink wink!
Avoid:
  • Boy shorts.  They tend to make hourglass figures look boxy.
  • Boy shorts are literally the only mistake you can make unless your swimsuit is hiddeous.  Get out of here.  I loathe your perfection.

You are a Column if you:

Swim Solution:
  • In order for your girlish looks to overshadow your boyish figure,  try going girly in feminine prints and colors; i.e. pink flowers.
  • Angled lines pointing downward give the illusion of a cinched waist, thus creating a faux figure.
  • Voluminous details such as ruffles, fringe, and hip ties will make you appear curvier
Avoid:
  • Bandeau tops.  They emphasize your lack of upper body curves.
  • Boy shorts... the truth is in the name.
  • Tight necked solid color one-pieces completely work against your shape.  Avoid these at all costs.
Now that you've gotten to know you body a little better, it's time to throw in a little swim trend!  The wetsuit look is totally in, as shown in the Suboo tankini and Lisa Marie Fernandez looks above.  Summer time sizzling is not possible without a little bit of white heat!  Any of these suits will look good in all white!  One particular look that I did not feature, but I'm sure you've seen, is the loose ruffle bikini tops that are in just about every store *rolls eyes*.  That seems to be a super hot trend, but I didn't bring it up because the trend is so prominent, every poolside chica is going to have it, and you know I have to keep you looking your SNOBBIEST!  The bondage, strappy look, featured in both Suboo suits above, is also a really hot look for this summer.  Keep in mind, however, that those tan lines are going to be CRAY, but we are familiar with great fashion coming at a price!  Have fun a the beach!

Until next time, TrendSnobsStay HOT!

Sprung! What's NEW!

The sun is shining, flowers have bloomed, and the pastiness of my wintry epidermis is slowly beginning to bronze.  Spring has officially sprung, and we are just on the cusp of summer fun!

In my last blog I gave you a revamp rundown on what can still be worn in Spring/Summer 2014 from Spring/Summer 2013. Now that you know what's back, it's time to talk about two NEW trends to be sure to rock this season.

What's NEW:  Wearable Art

This time of year, the runways of Paris, New York, Milan, and London tend to be one big garden party.  Don't get me wrong, I do love my florals and pastels... and who doesn't love a good party?  But this season, it is refreshing to see fashion as a more literal artistic expression.  Garments -- for the most part maintain classic silhouettes, while featuring graphic prints, Warhol-esque color schemes, chic cubism that would make Picasso proud, opulent embellishments, and portraiture reminiscent of the great Michelangelo.

Christopher Kane

Isa Arfen

JC de Castelbajac
(The belt is a drawing!)

Prada

Derbys

What's NEW:  Pop of Collar

If you prefer your art on your walls and a more toned down conservative look, prepare to pop your collars, Preppies!  Detachable collars were all the rage a few seasons ago, but this season, the trend is more... how should I say... "put together".  Whether it's a white peter pan on a pastel shirt dress, or a crisp white convertible on a classic oxford; buttoned tightly, or hanging loose, this look will take an understated ensemble to the next level of chic.

Christian Dior

Burberry Porsum
Michael Kors

Prabal Gurung
Tod's

Vionnet

Yohji Yamamoto

DSquared2

I'm loving how versatile fashion is right now!  So far, we've got trends that are tribal, sporty, artsy, and preppy. Whether you're rocking the looks loud or low-key, you're sure to make a statement in one or ALL of them. If you're a TrendSnob like me, have fun mixing and matching a trend or two for a whole NEW look!  Stay tuned for more warm weather wrap-ups as we head into the sizzling summer months ahead!

Sprung! What's Back

Alas, warmer weather is upon us! Say so long to icy snowstorms, farewell to frosty windshields, and peace out to parkas! Springtime is here!

I've got the runway rundown on what's back, what's new, and what's hot for Spring/Summer 2014!

For now, we'll talk about what's back.  We're only a few days into Spring, and it hasn't completely warmed up yet, so let's have a look at two trends that made the cut.  If you were TrendSnobbing around this time last year, you should be able to pull these looks from your closet this year to wear NOW!

What's Back: Tribal

Unearth your indigenous garb, because the tribal trend has returned for yet another season.  In the past, we boasted bright colors and mixed prints, but this Spring, the look is a little more toned down with prints featuring fewer colors for a refined, head to toe look.  Pay close attention to safari style, global influences from Africa, Asia, and India, and graphic prints in black and white.
Donna Karan
River Island
L.A.M.B.

Emilio Pucci

Stella Jean
What's Back:  Spring Sports

Last year, the sporty look had us sweating down the runway in lots of leather. This Spring, mesh and other breathable fabrics bring refreshing functionality to this current, sexy, and comfortable trend. Key items are joggers, jackets, and funky footwear.  Silhouettes are loose fitting at the top, slimming down beneath the knees.

Asos
Milly
Maison Martin Margiela

Gucci

Berluti
Will you be rocking any of these trends this season, or are you letting what happened in Spring 2013 stay in Spring 2013?!  I'd love to hear from you!  Stay tuned for a look at what's NEW and what's HOT for Spring 2014!

The Snobby Awards: 2014 Golden Globes Editon

Every year, the Golden Globes kick off the red carpet season; setting the tone and the trends for starlets of award shows to come.   Before I begin this fashionable read, I would like to have an 'I told you so' moment (yes, I'm petty) for the color palette I presented in my New Year, New You, New DRESS blog:

Does the Golden Globes color palette seem a little (ahem) familiar?

Now that we're on the topic of color palette, the top three color trends of the night were black, off-white, and red.  And while we're talking trends, the night was all about trains, clean lines, and voluminous fabric.  Hair was sleek and pulled away from the face, accessories were almost non-existent, and make-up was simple and natural.

Now, lets get this awards show about award shows on the road.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you

The Snobbies:
2014 Golden Globe Edition

The Pineapple Under the Sea Award goes to...

Lena Dunham

You may remember her from the Snobbies 2013 Awards when she received the Spongebob SquareDRESS award in a Zac Posen gown...

Well she's posing in Posen again this year!  Is this an ugly dress?  No.  Is this a bad silhouette on her? Not completely.  She gets the Pineapple Under the Sea Award because the overall look is not put together well.  The hair leaves a lot to be desired.  Somebody get this Girl some highlights... some low lights... something!  And that necklace... What is that? You have a hit show on HBO, so I know you can afford some jewels.  Somebody could have at least loaned you some diced pineapples (canary yellow diamonds, per rapper Rick Ross)! And I know the vampire look is in, but a little day-walking would do this Girl some good.  I do love that she's showing off her curvy figure...  Much better than last year!

The Sheer Genius Award goes to...

Cate Blanchett

Everything is right about this Armani Prive gown.  The sleeves, the fabric, the neckline, the suggestive positioning of the lace on her lower abdomen and upper thighs...  Her hair is simple, but elegant.  Her jewels are minimal, but eye-catching.  The dress graces her slender frame to perfection.  Cate looks effortlessly amazing.  After all, isn't what that what the red carpet is all about?

The Oh Baby Award goes to...

Kerry Washington

Who better to help you show off your baby bump than Balenciaga?  Kerry looks Scandal-less in this neutral toned ensemble.  I love the interesting take on the modern peplum that slightly conceals her preggy belly.  Styist's note:  Details just below the bust are flattering to a round figure.  Notice how the broach and starting point of the peplum are just below the bust, drawing the eyes to the upper part of the body, rather than the bottom.

The Beach Whet Award goes to...

Gabby Sidibe

If you're not from Atlanta, you would read that as B!#&h What?! Hey, it was better than Beached Whale!  Listen, listen, listen... I have nothing against my Big Beautiful Women, but come on Gabby!  This dress is an American Horror Story! The silhouette of the dress is appropriate for her shape, but the fabric is unforgiving.  Designers Daniel Musto and Michael Costello (of Project Runway) should have known this fabric would accentuate every lump, bump, and dimple once the light hits it.  And that Granny applique... Beach Whet?!

The #Werk Award goes to...

Kate Beckinsale

Fish-tail has been served! And, Ma'am?!  You better #WERK!!!!  Kate Beckinsale has given me LIFE in this this amazingly sparkly Zuhair Murad gown.  The cut!  The fit! The detail! The shine!  #Yaaaaasssssssss!!!  Kudos on the deep color of the nail polish and the messy side bun.  Her look was definitely a contender for a Snobby.  Kate, YOU DID THAT!

The Similac Award goes to...

Paula Patton

Yes, Similac... Because that giant ruffle looks like a giant baby spit up all over Paula Patton's shoulder and all down her dress.  Sure her body is breath-taking in this Stephanie Roland Couture gown, but the gown itself just isn't pretty.  I also wish her shoes showed off more of her feet since the dress has so much coverage.  The earrings are amazing. Hair is appropriate.  The ring is... awkwardly there, but I love green, so no shade over here.  Nice try, Paula.  Just try harder next time.

The Golden Globe goes to...

Anna Gunn

She can get a Golden Globe on this award show, because this is the SNOBBIES!!!!  And this Donna Karan Altier gown is gorgeous!  The slight wave of fabric at the bust is just a ripple compared to the ocean of antique gold fabric bursting from the back.  The only thing I love about this look, however, is the dress.  Anna's blonde hair and neutral makeup makes this look a total wash-out!  I would love to see this dress on someone with darker hair, with a rouge lip, and a few more curves.

The Gone With the Wind Award goes to...

Joanna Newsom

Does Joanna think she is Gone With the Wind Fabulous in this dress?  If she does, she needs to twirl her behind all the way home and think again!  I couldn't find the name of the designer of this dress, but if I were them, I would want to remain anonymous too!  Contrary to most reviews, I actually don't completely hate this dress.  I'm a girl of whimsy!  Lose the trim at the hem, and this would be a pretty gown.  But her hair... I guess her hair stylist didn't get the memo that the '90's Prom' hair style is so... 90's PROM!!!  Pull that hair back, child!  It's giving your ruffles unwanted competition.

The Bell of the Ball Award goes to...

Michelle Dockery

The bell silhouette of this dress was refreshing amongst the sea of mermaid silhouettes on the red carpet. I am loving the gold lame behind the eyelet fabric.  High-low hem lines were also seen at the awards show, but this was the only one done 100% right.  I love the combination of the color of this dress along with her dark hair, alabaster skin, and stained lips.  I would have loved for her to have had a simple and dainty necklace, perhaps a bracelet, and definitely some different shoes.  This was also a contender for a Snobby.

And while we're on the subject...

The Snobby Goes to...

Lupita Nyong'o

Nominated for her role in Twelve Years A Slave, Lupita is forever a star in this crimson Ralph Lauren caped gown.  I love everything about this dress: the color, the silhouette... and who doesn't love a cape?!  No one else could rock this hairstyle but her, and she rocks it oh-so-well! Her skin is as radiant as her smile.  One word to describe this look:  Flawless.  (She woke up like this!)  And no, those are not blood diamonds in her ear.  They're Fred Leighton jewels that add simplistic beauty to this red-hot ensemsble.  I'm excited about seeing more fashion and films from this Yale School of Drama grad.  You go, Lupita!

Well that's all from me Snobsters!  Did you have a red carpet favorite from the Golden Globes? I'd love to hear it!
